We are seeing a large surge of tweeting coming from Bahrain itself, and heavy activity on the Bahrain related hashtag. As we have anticipated for some time the protests in Bahrain are continuing to keep motivated and unified despite a crackdown via the use the of the Internet, especially Twitter.

Introducing the Google +1 Button

Google +1 takes the concept of Likes in Facebook book or RTs and Favorites in Twitter and brings it to their search. The big question is, will it take off. I can already tweet about what I like. That enhances search data for Google. Personally I think I might get a bit freaked out if I was say searching for well dating services or porn and say my uncle's preferences showed up. But this is the way things are going and Google probably had to introduce something like this.

We are still anticipating a much bigger system called Circle coming soon. This is a fairly minor effort to make Google Search more social.

At the 2011 SocialMedia WorldForum in London we got to meet up with Josh Williams founder and CEO of Gowalla. Josh is a true visionary in the area of spatial web. We enjoyed a few minutes discussing how spatial data will impact the web, and how the love of travel and discovery helped motivate him to develop Gowalla as a tool of exploration. Josh also has some interesting things to say about the developing world and a near future dominated by
mobile access to the Internet.
Josh is one of the most articulate voices for how the spatial web will open new possibilities not just for finding goods and services but also expanding the global imaginations of people. This is definitely someone to follow in the field of Web 3.0 and location based services.

Social media business sees some big deals


BBC News - Social media business heats up for Radian 6, Salesforce and Jive: "Cloud service provider has bought social media tracking firm Radian6 for $326m (£203m).

The deal demonstrates the rapidly growing interest in how companies use social media to connect with customers. itself recently began to sell a social media tool for companies.

Another social media player, Jive, meanwhile announced that top managers from Google and Facebook had joined its board, a clear sign that it is getting ready for a stock market flotation."

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey rejoins company

"Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, who was pushed out of the company as chief executive in 2008, is to return full time to lead product development.

He will replace fellow co-founder Evan Williams, who has stepped back from daily involvement with Twitter but will remain on the board.

The announcement was tweeted by chief executive Dick Costolo who wrote that he was "excited" by the return.

Mr Dorsey followed up the tweet, saying that he was "thrilled".

He says he intends to remain chief executive of a mobile payments service called Square, which is located near Twitter's San Francisco headquarters.

"As executive chairman, Jack will dive into work with more than 450 people, led by an experienced executive team," Twitter said in a company statement.

"The timing is fortuitous; not only is Twitter experiencing record growth, but we also now have a new infrastructure that will keep us ahead of that growth and enable us to launch products that will make Twitter more instant, simple and always present," the statement said.

Some things learned on Social Branding from Social Media World Forum #SMWF London

Having a interesting conference at #SMWF

This morning there as a high power team of large brands and successful social marketers like Dell, Smart Cars, Unilever, Habbo Hotel, and several others giving presentations on Social Media and brands.

Summing up some key points;
  • Social media as a tool of branding is very new and there is a lack of uniform methods and measures.
  • This lack of methods and measures will almost certainly be short lived as firms ask for ROI on money spend in Social Media.
  • This will start an age of unprecedented data collection.
  • Social media certainly removes much of the power of a companies brand from its own marketing and PR people, and moves it to the social community. Brands need to be "raised right" and leave home to be right.
  • Social networks could make brand identity even more important, as the world of Internet becomes more as a mob it will be more important to have a solid reputation and even harder to obtain it.
  • Open Social Community will not, therefore, end the "brand" as we know it. In the opinion of presenter after presenter it will make it more important, but branding is their jobs.
  • Companies need to learn from their mistakes. Getting 'punked' in media, learning to deal with the social media properties, information getting out there requires that brands be more authentic and deal more with feedback. If you delete user comments in one forum you will get 'punked' on alternative parts of the social network.
  • Companies need to move beyond the "no bad news and no failures" mentality, and many branders expressed a unwillingness to delete any comment.
  • A community based brand can, when being 'punked' or trolled, actually defend itself. This was an experience recently with Smart Car.

Some key lessons about Tweeting from Dell

This morning at the Social Media World Conference in London Kerry Bridge from Dell made some salient points about an effective twitter campaign. Rather than trying to sum up Dell's position I will just p0int a fews things I noticed:
  • Does your corporate twitter page have photos embedded, maybe on the side? People will respond much more positively to a person than a corporate image.
  • Does you twitter pages have its message clearly? People should be able to clearly understand what the twitter site is about from reading its introduction.
  • Does you site have clear links to your web page?
  • Are you engaging? A twitter page should be more of a forum or space than just another channel for corporate communications.
Early today some very interesting discussions on brand today. A key lesson learned was that brands are no longer you servant, but more like your grown up children. You need to raise your brands well to be sure they will function well on their own in the social Internet.

Social Media Keynote at SMWF

Russel Lidstone Euro RSCG London is talking about social marketing advertising at a big firm.

These notes are more of my thoughts from the talk rather than a record of his talk.

Though the message of this mornings talks is that Social Media is new there is a growing understanding that it will be important. But it is not clear how social media will impact how people buy and sell. But we as yet do not have a very good understanding of how this may work. Russel Lidstone's talk was very illuminating for this.

RSCG was interesting for using Social Global marketing for Dulux paint. Paint would normally be seen as a commodity market: buckets of chemicals.

RSCG applied social thinking to selling paint. Paint is what applies colour to surfaces but these colours are used to change homes, to change communities and buildings, and to change our view of the world. Colour is a deeply social concept and by thinking in terms of the "benefits of colour" the social marketing campaign embraces the larger community to sell more paint.

Dulux "Lets Colour" embraces global community movements, it is positive and engaging. These values are essential to any activity in the social network world. Today a "Brand must be a Verb not a Noun."

The Dulux "Let's Colour" campaign using blogs, social media and events to engage people and communities to form a wider social concept of colour in culture. In the end the marketing extended beyond the TV commercial. Rather the idea was to make people think of Dulux when they think of colour. To advertise in a social media world requires a social engagement.

It probably should be no surprise the role social media has played in recent Arab Protests. Social Media, if you are selling something or not, is always about engagement (my thought here).

A very interesting talk on SMWF just now

Will it be necessary to have a Klout score of 50 to get a job in high technology soon? Thomas Power just said so at the Social Media World Forum in London. A very interesting talk about grading and ranking reputation. Thomas gave an interesting talk about social capital being a well established predictor of life outcome. But once everyone knows their social capital score will it be gamed out of having any value? We wonder if once your Klout score becomes essential wil it then lose its value.

The history of the past 40 years is that Economic models can make better predictions when they are not being used by governments to set policy. Once the academic concept of social capital becomes an essential part of our lives will it be gamed by rational agents in to having no value?

Socialmedia Worldforum Europe SMWF is about to begin

Having a technology conference that starts at 8am seems a bit strange to us. But the European version of SXSW is about to begin. We will be bringing you the blow by blows as they develop. Walking through the stalls this morning it is amazing to see that an entire ecosystem of firms has evolved around Facebook and Twitter.

Track the intensity of tweeting in real time during the SMWF conference. Use the High Definition Mode to see if the tweeting really takes off during the day.

Update: we are starting to see the tweets rise as we move to the 9:10 am start of the first sessions. Should see them exploded pretty soon so remember to turn your geo-tagging.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Points: Topguest Hooks Up With Instagram

Topguest’s goal is to unify that experience by letting you earn points simply by checking-in on social networks like Foursquare and Facebook. And now they’re adding a new layer to the mix:Instagram photos.

Yes, beginning today when the integration goes fully live, you’ll be able to earn reward points at venues around the world simply by taking a picture and sharing it on Instagram. This may mean hotel points, air miles, or other benefits at the over 10,000 places Topguest currently works with. All you have to do is link up Topguest to your Instagram account (viatheir new API) and make sure your picture is geotagged at the venue.

To celebrate the launch, Virgin America is launching a special competition. The most-liked Instagram photos taken at various Virgin America-related venues (like airport terminals) will win 1,000 bonus Elevate points (their frequent flyer program). MySpace loses 10 million in one month


BBC - Newsbeat - MySpace loses millions of users in a few weeks:

"Tech industry analysts comScore say figures show MySpace lost more than 10 million unique users worldwide between January and February.

'There were almost 63 million users of MySpace in February 2011, down from more than 73 million.

'Year on year the site has lost almost 50 million users, down from close to 110 million in February 2010."

There was a lot of facebbok users at the protest. The majority of young people I asked were keeping in touch on the ground via facebook. This young woman was sending a facebook message to her friends about where to meet up-Photo By Gail Orenstein. Web 3.0 Lab/Clima.

There is a heavy concentrate of tweeting coming from the occupation taking place in Oxford street. Though the protests are not as large as in Hyde Park the tweeting levels are extremely high.

Anticipating a large protests in London today

Update: some reports now saying the crowd was around half a million people in it. Looking at the intensity of tweeting it seems possible.

Tracking tweeting in London can be difficult because of the heavy background nose of day to day tweeting taking place in London almost all the time. We have developed a HD tool to do just this. With this tool we can pinpoint very precisely location of very recent tweeting.

Using this HD Twitter tool we see a very large group of people forming around Embankment and Parliament east of Hyde Park. We will be watching to see if the group moves west towards Hyde Park. We assumed from this cluster and the high activity around the Twitter hashtag #26march that we will be seeing a massive protests today in central London.

UPDATE: We are now seeing the media reporting that 300,000 or more may be converging on London. We have also seen Twitter local to London going doing some as the crowd seems to have crashed it with tweets. This protest today may be the largest event in twitter protest history.

We are seeing levels of high concentrated tweeting around the start of the protest now that we have never seen for any location anywhere. We are some some of the most concentrated tweeting in one location for one event we have ever seen anywhere, including Tahrir when Mubarak fell. In fact the numbers are blowing anything we have ever seen in Egypt out of the water.

Using our Clima High Density Twitter analysis beta we can make out a large group of people coming out of Embankment London who we assume are getting ready for today's anti-government protest. This tool is very sensitive to very high levels of tweeting, giving a more precise picture of dense tweeting in a small space.
Using it we can see that the density at and around Embankment today is far higher than in the other areas. Right now we are watching a surge in tweeting around this area and we assume we will be able to watch crowd movement through the day as 10,000s of activists come in to London.

The tweet hastage #26march is exploding. If each tweet represents 1 person marching there would probably be several hundred thousands of protesters.
