Slutwalks: another social media enabled protest movement

Slutwalk Toronto, the original protest city

Last year a Toronto police office told a group of young people that women could avoid being raped by not dressing like sluts. For liberal Canada such a comment came as something of a surprise, for many young people more than just a surprise. Many women were enraged by the content of the comments, but how do you organize tens of thousands of self confessed "sluts" to protest excuses for sexual violence? The answer turned out to be social media.

Now the movement has spread to cities all over Canada, USA, and Europe, including this Chicago group.

Going to facebook and twitter the slutwalk meme has spread like fire, with slutwalk groups now forming all over North America and Europe. Another example of how social media is promoting a very agile and global set of civil society movements from the Arab Uprising, to anti-austerity cuts in Europe to sluts rights.
