Student tweet locations from Virginia Tech

We can see a large number of tweets coming from Virginia Tech University, in the past half hour all have concerned a recent shooting. Graphic created with the clima.me twitter trackign tool

Many tweets concern being on lock down from the shooter, the above graphic shows the locations of tweets coming from students inside of dorms during the shooting.

We can not stress more that students should turn off their location setting on Twitter during an event like this, the attacker can find people hiding in buildings if they tweet with their location!

  1. I disagree, I think it's imperative to have location on so that if you post something related to seeing an attacker, PEOPLE CAN FIND YOU. Imagine if you got a photo of the suspect and your location was off.

  2. Well there are two sides to the issue. Probably though an emergency response would be better with a geo-tag, but a tweet with a geo-tag that says 'I am hiding from a gunman', which we saw some of today, is maybe not a good idea
