#Sandy's impact on twitter activity

This dashboard allows you to track the level of tweeting in Atlantic City, New York and Boston in real time.  We have created it as Hurricane Sandy moves towards the east coast.  We anticipate sharp drops in tweeting as the storm moves in to these areas, but will be interesting to watch.

New York City, normally you will see over 100 tweets an hour from this region

UPDATE: 6:00 AM local time and we are seeing very low tweeting from New York city, which almost never goes below 100 tweets an hour in a 250 mile radius around City Hall.  Given the gravity of the story we would impact a massive spike of tweets from City hall. These are very subdued rates given the size of New York and the gravity of the event.  As you can see below Boston, which was north of the worst of it has higher tweeting right now than New York city.  We have never seen that before.  The story is pretty sad in Atlantic City where the levels of tweeting are so low we can only assume what tweets we get are likely mis-tagged and Atlantic city is seeing now tweeting right now.

Reports are that major websites are being taken down, today I could not access Huffingtopost.com, I had imagined they would have mirror sites in the UK but I guess now.
